Words of the Wetlands

Poetry competition

ENTRIES ARE NOT OPEN YET – CHECK BACK 1st NOVEMBER TO ENTER

Our writing competition

Welcome to Words of the Wetlands; our national youth writing competition celebrating creativity, nature and the incredible wildlife found in beaver wetlands. We’re inviting children under 12 across England, Scotland and Wales to share their poetry skills by creating a handwritten acrostic poem inspired by beavers and the amazing wetland wildlife they support. Through imagination, curiosity and storytelling, we hope to give young people a chance to connect with nature and to use their voices to speak for our precious wetlands.

When does the competition open?

Entries will be accepted from 1st November until 31st December 2026 OR until 10,000 entries have been made. If 10,000 entries are made, an announcement will be made to indicate that the competition is closing early.

Winners will be announced publicly in March 2027 with prizes awarded thereafter.

Who can enter?

Anyone aged 5-11 years who is in education, whether this be through school or independent learning. Children may enter as individuals, however prizes will be awarded on a group level, such as to the winner’s school or home-ed group. There is a maximum of 5 entries per class/group so we encourage some pre-submission shortlisting if possible.
